Om Swaha

In the late 1970s, a rising number of incidents of deaths - brides driven to suicide or killed by in laws demanding more and more dowry - were hitting headlines in the daily newspapers in Delhi and elsewhere. Some women's organisations got together and asked Maya to create a street play that could be taken around to raise awareness around the issue. Theatre director, Anuradha Kapur was also invited and together, they devised with the group, scripted, performed and directed Om Swaha. The play travelled to several cities and towns in India and was translated into 13 Indian languages. All photos: Sheba Chhachhi
